What’s new in Blackwood

Summer 2018

Blackwood and surrounding suburbs have been undergoing somewhat of a quiet renaissance in recent years, with some wonderful new shops and cafes opening in the area.

We’ve highlighted just a handful of stores that have either opened or expanded in the past 12 months.

My Father’s Son is not your average barber.  While barber shops have made a big comeback in recent years, we’re not sure any have done it quite like Pieter, who has created his unique version of a modern man cave in the Magnet Shopping Centre behind Woolworths in Blackwood.
From the hand painted barber sign out the front to his pet lizards Sharon and Trev out the back, this eclectic store offers plenty to talk about as you enjoy a cleansing ale while Pieter plies his trade.

Hubert and Mavis Art Studio in Hawthorndene exists to provide a place where you can recharge, reconnect and nurture your wellbeing. Artist Simone Linehan says she has designed creative sessions to support participants through relaxation, creative expression and artistic play. She offers a range of art sessions for women and children on weekdays and Sundays, while corporate sessions can also be arranged.

Delicia Acai + Protein Bar in Main Road, Blackwood (opposite Coles) specialises in acai, espresso, protein and raw treats.  Their delicious menu is designed for vegans and vegetarians, gym goers and paleos, and for the ever-growing number of those who are simply health conscious. (Hint: for Blackwood Fitness Centre regulars, it’s just a short detour on the walk back to your car!)

GD Wholesale Fruit & Veg in Hawthorndene has grown from a small self-serve shop front with an ‘honour’ cash payment box to a wonderful mini marketplace. The business has been supplying wholesale produce to schools, aged care facilities, cafes, restaurants and hotels since 1961. Now Ben and Trudy, who took over the business in 2006, have significantly expanded the shop front to supply an extensive range of fresh produce as well as a wonderful variety of grocery products including gourmet lines.

Banana Boogie Bakery in Belair is renowned as one of the best bakeries in Adelaide with its signature vanilla slice being awarded as second best in Australia in national competition.  Now they’ve significantly expanded their store to offer more seating, and a greater (and even more delicious) range of baked goodies.
